Captive8 caught up with Debbie Calliope Smith, Editor of Hips & High heels, and this is what she had to say about curves, shopping, spring, and the must-have maxi!
When life gives you curves…
Slap on some accessories and swing those hips.
I have never been filled with vexation or despondence about my weight. I have always chosen to rather concentrate on the traits and features that bring me joy. We all have those. I don’t think I’ve ever met someone who does not at least like one thing about themselves. They may be deliberately blind to it, but it’s there and eventually they too will see it.
The life of a curvy girl isn’t that much different to that of our slimmer counterparts. We all go through heartache, happiness, hangovers and obstacles. We are women of all shapes and ages, and in that there is unity. I would say however, that us more voluptuous girls tend to struggle a bit in the clothing department, but even that can be overcome with some creativity and persistence. (A credit card helps too
)
I regard shopping in the same way a pirate would regard a treasure hunt. That initial excitement when the quest begins. The long strenuous journey involving blistered toes and clutching handbags, but all made worthwhile when you peruse the clothing shelves and come across the bountiful booty (no, not mine) marked with a big X. It’s difficult to describe the feeling I get when I’m standing in a fitting room, wearing the perfect item. I get poetic and quite often I break out in song, dancing about in front of an incredibly bored fitting room attendant, showing off my newest favorite clothing item. It’s a rush for me, one that can only be surpassed by the discovery of a book sale. I get so excited about book sales that I tend to want to wee a bit. I digress… The point I want to make, very inarticulately, is that shopping is a wonderful experience all women should enjoy and I thoroughly do!
Having become rather bored by mundane winter, I have decided to look forward to spring. With spring comes flowers and sandals and gorgeous headbands oh and MAXI dresses. I love maxi dresses. Solids or prints, every girl should own a maxi dress. It fits just about every body type and is a sure way to get you in the swing of spring (har har). I have yet to find the maxi that screams Calliope, but when I do, I know that the heavens will part and Angels will break out in song celebrating my new found treasure…
What are you looking forward to this spring?

Hi there
I am working on a plus size lingerie range as i agree fully with your concept. For too long are us big girls made to feel like all we deserve to fit into are hugely flowered, bright, unattractive, shapeless tents!!!
Please email me your catalogue.
Thanks so much
